In episode 22 of Common Sense Civics and Citizenship, I examine a question that has bothered me for some time. Students are taught today that the Christian faith was largely absent in the forming of our country. That is not what I learned in all my years of schooling, both public and private schools. My children’s generation insists that the Founders believed in an absentee god. I studied examples of the Founders’ own words and simply ask, “Would a deist say/do this? What conclusion would you draw? Is the United States of America founded only on the intellect of a few Founders or was there faith in an unseen but very real God behind their words and work?
