The longest living President, Jimmy Carter, passed away this week. Reflections on Carter’s presidency often highlight significant challenges and unpopular or failed solutions. Who remembers lining up to get gas for their car? How about Carter’s strong suggestion to “wear a sweater” and keep indoor temps to 55 degrees? (It was cold!) Remember the Iranian hostage crisis that kept 52 American hostages for over a year and the failed attempt to rescue them? What about inflation? Or high, higher, highest interest rates? Yet, we appropriately remember Carter’s contributions to his country and fellow man. While his presidency faced significant challenges, Carter’s legacy goes beyond politics.
Remembering the Good: Carter’s Values
We remember President Carter for his values of loyalty, commitment, and lifelong service to God and country. Carter was married for 77 years, served his country for 7 years in the Navy, and founded an organization (Habitat for Humanity) that built 4000 homes for those in need after his presidency. He co-founded the Carter Center, promoting democracy, human rights, and global health initiatives. Carter’s Christian faith guided his service to others in public and private life.
Carter’s Impactful Life
Jimmy Carter, lived an impactful life. Carter was a husband, father, Navy Lieutenant, businessman, humanitarian, Sunday school teacher, governor, Nobel Peace Prize recipient, cancer survivor, and 39th President of the United States.
Loyalty, commitment, and lifelong service define a life well-lived. Rest in peace, Jimmy Carter.
