Memorial Day 2020 takes on new significance for me this year. How about you? Instead of calling to mind plans for a picnic or a parade, I think about the cause of freedom that these American military men and women died for since the Civil War.
This nation is experiencing a loss of freedom. Memorial Day couldn’t come at a better time. One wonders why anyone goes to war and risks making the ultimate sacrifice for people they may never meet. What distinctive about freedom called out to them? Was it life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, or the future opportunity to experience it? Think of all of the fear they had to overcome and the amount of focus the job demanded.
How about the struggle to learn all it took to be a capable, brave warrior?
Overcoming second guesses.
Eating MRE’s.
Not having enough to eat.
All night guard duty.
Handling explosives with care until fury is unleashed.
Discipline.
Motivation.
Dealing with the aftermath of a death.
Carrying your best friend over your shoulder, hoping for the best.
The guilt.
Going into battle each day, knowing it may be his/her last.
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Eternity flashing before their eyes.
A young life gone too soon.
Yes, I’m thinking about these things on this Memorial Day, 2020. While I won’t be able to place a flower or a flag on a grave this year, my heart is with those who fought that I might live in freedom.
May God give them eternal rest.
In what way might your thoughts about Memorial Day be different this year?
