The picture above is a copy of the first State of the Union address by President George Washington. Just a reminder that the State of the Union address will be given February 4, 2019, at 9 pm eastern. As always, I recommend using a site that runs the event without comment. C-SPAN is my go-to, but you might also try house.gov for video without comment. It’s amazing what you see when the camera is running and commentators aren’t talking. Another choice is C-SPAN radio or streaming audio.
Children and teens are interested, but usually not in the speech. They want to know why one side claps and others doesn’t and why the reverse happens. They like the symbolism of the flag, the eagle, etc. Young people also want to know what room holds all of those people. Let your kids be the commentators. It’s amazing what they notice!
