We commemorate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, today, May 8, 2020. Five years ago, I was privileged to visit the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Normandy, France. We remember that incredible victory that changed the world and salute the bravery of Americans who gave their lives in the cause of freedom.
At the cemetery that day, I was given a beautiful white rose to lay at the foot of any soldier’s grave. The white gravestones stretched on forever. Who to choose? I stopped at the marker of this soldier from Georgia. He died in January, 1945, just about 5 months before the Germans surrendered to us. Today, bells toll in that cemetery, reminding us never to forget the price of freedom.
I am grateful to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. The World War II soldiers, wherever they have been laid to rest, are an example to me of what it means to “answer the call.” #GreatAmericans ??
