In my last Common Sense Civics and Citizenship article, I ended by saying, “We’ll fix what is wrong. We will start by taking back our children, schools, and our supply chains.” On November 2, 2021, we took back our children, our schools, police departments, and more. Next up are the supply chains. Hopefully, the fuel we need to heat homes in the northern tier of the USA this winter is another big issue that will win, turning this country toward, once again, meeting its own needs.
We’ve only just begun.
I can’t tell you the number of naysayers I encounter who say America is finished. I’ve never agreed with that assessment. My hope is in the DNA of liberty inside each American. It turns out, my hope (and yours) is not misplaced. Americans are getting after it, big time.
People say that the elec—tion process is irreparably harmed. That is not the case if you show up and win in significant numbers. November 2, 2021, proved that. As I tell my junior high students: “If you don’t show up, you have zero chance of affecting anything. If you show up, there is a chance that you will affect the results. You will never know what difference you make if you sit at home. You’re just surrendering. So, when you’re an adult, grab your water bottle and go stand in line. Make your voice heard.”
Congratulations, America. Freedom is in our DNA. We may not agree on anything else, but don’t tell us our children belong to the state. We’ll show you who is in charge of our offspring. Don’t hide what’s in the school library. We’ll go in and find out for ourselves. Then, we’ll read portions of illicit, inappropriate literature aloud at school board meetings. Don’t allow Americans to burn cities down in unpeaceful protests. We will replace leaders who allow such destructive, unconstitutional activities. If a candidate promises us the moon on a silver platter and gives us cream cheese instead, we will fire said candidate for not keeping the promises made. Americans are smart. We can figure things out.
That’s how we roll.
