Would You Choose Security Over Liberty?
Is Your choice security over liberty? If you answered yes, you are not alone. Throughout history, people have chosen their security over liberty. History has shown us that it is a choice with disastrous consequences. Once you’ve lived free, you never want to return to the yoke of slavery, be it a bad personal habit or an authoritarian government.
People Choose Security Over Liberty- Fear
Why do people choose security over liberty? The number one reason is fear—fear of uncertainty or danger. A government will tell you they intercept your personal information to protect you. History shows us that this has happened in the United States, particularly over terrorism threats or even economic issues. Promises of protection and security entice us to accept restricted freedoms. We prioritize security over liberty when we fear potential harm, taking our freedom for granted. However, it’s necessary to think critically about these trade-offs rather than accept them at face value. People seek immediate gratification (security) over courage in the face of the unknown.
People Choose Security Over Liberty- Predictability
Another reason we choose security over liberty is predictability. People will prize order over having courage in the face of unknown outcomes. Sure, we put locks on our doors to prevent crime. But, this action doesn’t hinder our ability to go to the gym, grocery store, or take the kids to their sports. However, when the government restricts your physical movements or doesn’t keep your city safe, your freedom to go places and do things is curtailed. At that point, we may put our trust in government or certain systems to maintain order so our lives are more manageable during unstable times. We don’t protest surrendering some personal freedoms to give ourselves a sense of order in the face of confusion.
People Choose Security Over Liberty- Will You?
What freedoms are we willing to give up? Some people believe authority figures know what’s best for society. As a result, they are eager to give up certain liberties in exchange for protection.
What freedoms are you willing to surrender to your government? Ask yourself why. It is essential to examine this issue as we live in changing times, even dangerous ones.
What freedoms are you willing to surrender? Better yet, what can you do to protect the freedoms you cherish?
