I teach my Civics and Constitution students this principle: “The life of the leader sets the course for the people.” So, the generals need to lose weight and get fit. They have new rules to follow and enforce. Yet, their attitude seemed to be, “he called us here for this???” Yes, setting the course for the military was worth every penny to bring them in from their posts around the world. When did military leaders become immune to course corrections?
I will show the Secretary of War’s first five minutes of his speech in my Junior High civics class, and I will tie it in with the closing line of the Declaration of Independence. That last line says, “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” I will show my young students that courage is still in style in this country. So is taking the authority God has given you to do your job.
We need courage, character, and resolve to be eternally vigilant over our nation. Our forefathers had those attributes. If we want our military to provide for the common defense in battle, recruits and officers need to return to the same disciplines that previous generations had.
