America will survive. Some of you have written to me that, as a country, you think we are doomed. Last week, I heard this while driving: “America has had problems before. We solved the problems. It will be good again.” This sentiment resonates with me. I believe America will survive. Things will be good again (i.e., resolve to solve our problems). Here’s why:
A Few Times That Tested America’s Resolve
1775-1783- Revolution (War for Independence)
The War of 1812
The Civil War
1929 to the 1940s- Economic Collapse
World Wars I and II
1960s- Racial Tensions; JFK, MLK, RFK Assassinations; Vietnam War
1970s- Energy Crisis (Arab Oil Embargo), Watergate, Iran Hostage Crisis
2001- September 11 terrorist attack here at home
There are so many more tests of our nation’s resolve, like epidemics, natural disasters, messy presidential elections, and world tensions, in addition to all we face today as a divided nation.
Unbelief That We Can Survive
Some will say that we came together as a nation to solve problems, which is why we survived. Conversely, these people believe it is impossible for us to come together as a nation today because there is so much opposition and apathy. They forget (or never learned) that it only took a minority of people to set the spark of liberty aflame in the colonies and win our independence from England.
Another rebuttal to American survival is that we are no longer a nation that believes or trusts in God. But, we have always worked and lived side by side with atheists and people of other faiths who don’t accept the Judeo-Christian ethic. (However, they DO like the benefit of Judeo-Christian principles when the law does not allow stealing, murder, cheating, etc., and promotes a strong work ethic, trust, peace, respect, etc.) Americans love “thy liberty in law.” My Jr. High students will tell you that the opposite of “liberty in law” is chaos—and no one wants chaos. If today’s kids can figure this out, adults can too.
Belief That America Can Survive
We have yet to see what the quiet majority of Constitution-preserving, freedom-loving Americans will do to kindle the fire of the American spirit once again. I’ve said it before: We are a free-born people. It’s in our DNA. Never underestimate the power of the American spirit.
Things will be good again.
