What national symbol declares this saying?” Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all inhabitants thereof.” (Leviticus 25:10) If you are an irreligious person, it’s ok. No one here will force you to declare the faith of our forefathers. Just try to understand the heritage we all share and apply it to notions of liberty today. BTW, if you answered “Liberty Bell” as the national symbol, you are correct!
Bonus question: What period in history was this verse often referenced? “….where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” That’s right. Galatians 5:1 was frequently cited during the Civil War.
Why do we make such a big deal out of liberty in this country? Think about this: Most nations historically have been ruled from the top-down. If you are living in some regions of the country today, you are experiencing top-down ruling. You do not have the freedom you had before a couple of months ago. Our Founders pursued a different way of governance. We, the People are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights. Government, according to our Founders, comes from God to The People. Then We the People elect office-holders. The government’s flow is from the bottom (the people) to our elected representatives, not top-down. No kings, dictators, or tyrants allowed. This arrangement, we learned, moved civilization up about 5000 years. Where people have freedom, they thrive.
Our country is not thriving. Many seem willing, after obeying elected officials and “flattening the curve,” to embrace false security over freedom. No earthly person or human-made law can guarantee you a longer life. A stream of belief flowing through our country is that we must remain under a type of Marshall Law until the disease is eradicated. Common sense tells us that after COVID-19, there will be another life-threatening illness, or killer hornets, or some other looming threat to garner our fears. Reality is, there will never be enough vaccines to guarantee you a disease-free life. Science, appropriately used, can assist you in your quest for a healthy life. However, like anything else, science could be misused as a cover to take away your right to self-government.
Our Founders never turned their lives over to any king, dictator, or tyrant. They pursued liberty in the face of fear. Their writings speak of individual freedom to make personal choices. This is not to be confused with selfish choices. The laws of nature and nature’s God require a moral conscience to live in freedom. “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” John Adams, America’s first vice-president, and second president.
We are a free-born people conceived in liberty. We were born as a nation of laws, not ruled by the ever-changing whims of man. Our rights come from God, not government.
Choose liberty.
