What would it look like if America divided itself into two warring divisions with the promise of retribution if one or the other division won power? Let’s look at wisdom from George Washington and Abraham Lincoln that is as relevant today as it was during their time.
Guarding Against Partisan Jealousies
Washington warned in his Farewell Address to the nation that if we divided into political parties, we could be tempted to misrepresent the opinions of those Americans who saw things differently or held opposing views: “…within particular districts, is to misrepresent the opinions and aims of other districts…”
Washington continued:
“You cannot shield yourselves too much against the jealousies and heart burnings which spring from these misrepresentations: they tend to render alien to each other those who ought to be bound together by fraternal affection.” In other words, Washington said we ought to shield ourselves from overly passionate partisans who inflame our emotions and tear apart our national loyalties.
Washington understood the temptation to win at all costs rather than to remain loyal to the nation. He seems to suggest that national loyalty comes first, as in God, family, and country. Notice that political divisions, factions, and parties are not in the top three priorities.
Can a Divided House Stand?
Abraham Lincoln, a senatorial candidate and future president at the time, quoted ancient wisdom in his famous “House Divided speech in 1858: “ A house divided against itself cannot stand.” While he lost the Senate race, he later won the presidency. His words ring true still today.
Healing the Rift: A National Call
As you observe our country today, ask yourself:
How are deep political divisions interfering with national loyalty, or “fraternal affection,” as Washington called it?
Our nation was divided against itself and went to war, killing each other in April 1861. Could the same thing happen again?
Having observed nations with tribal wars or nationalities that hate other specific nationalities, what is the outcome? What would that look like for the United States today?
Finally, what should we do about it?
