I loved Year In Review segments as a kid, and continued the tradition into adulthood. This year, however, I took a pass. Division and discord seem to summarize 2025. I don’t care to re-live it. I’m ready to move forward, with lessons from the past and a renewed focus on what matters to a common-sense citizen advocate.
We may see another government shutdown. As always, each new year brings a wealth of laws. Yet, the promise of a national celebration for our 250th birthday is exciting. The hope for greater unity grows. Here are some Common Sense Civics and Citizenship ideas to make this year a profitable learning experience.
-As you consume news, look at all sides of an issue. Don’t let the media provide you with your opinions. Have your own conclusions based on facts.
-As you review prospective candidates for office, find out what they do with the small things in their lives today. Their actions in their current everyday life affect the more significant issues, personally and professionally. Choose brave men and women who stand up for traditional American values of faith, family, and freedom…and the U.S. Constitution, of course.
-As you review current topics in our culture, seek out truth, justice, and the American way. What now may be considered outdated may be precisely what is needed in a society that seems to have glibly tossed aside its foundations.
-Be a person in 2026 who finishes what they start. Lots of people start with good intentions. Few people finish. Stay the course. Remember, there are always people who are watching your life. Being an American is a privilege and carries great responsibility.
Get involved in America’s 250th birthday! Include some part of this milestone in your schedule and join the festivities.
These are just a few ideas to take your focus (and mine) away from the headlines of 2026 and onto the more important issues that concern Common Sense Civics and Citizenship. A very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year to you all!
