Recently, I was informed by a participant that my article, “DOGE, Dividends, and Debt” (https://civicsandcitizenship.org/doge-dividends-and-debt/ )was political and not a civics issue. I say economic issues are civics issues. Let’s discuss.
The Economy Impacts Our Lives
Comprehending how your government taxes you, spends your money or grows the economy is essential to understanding how our Republic functions. Such knowledge directly affects your life. For example, if the government engages in wasteful spending, that’s money you could use better. Should you trust the government to do more with your money than you could? Our Founders built our country on mistrust of government. That’s why We the People have a Bill of Rights in our Constitution. Do you see the connection between fiscal issues and civics?
Economics Issues Are Civics Issues
We must realize that economic issues encompass many areas, such as how we manage our country’s resources. I’m sure the Southern Californians and Northwestern Tennesseans would call this a civics issue.
What about policies and regulations in your workplace? Realize that these laws, policies, and regulations affect your quality of life. Laws are civics issues.
The Bottom Line
Ignorance of economic issues because “it’s too deep” or “not in my wheelhouse” is not bliss. Failure to pay attention to these matters because you aren’t interested means that you are OK with letting someone else confiscate your hard-earned dollars and use the money for what is important to them, not you.
At its core, civics is about how we govern ourselves, including how government manages our money. When we ignore economic issues, we give up control over decisions that impact our daily lives, from taxes to regulations to the national debt. Understanding the economy isn’t just for experts; it’s for every American who cares about their rights, future, and country. After all, an informed citizen is an empowered one.
