What is the right that you treasure the most in our Bill of Rights? I can’t pick just one. I treasure them all! I mean, look at this shortlist. What’s not to like? I want to live in a country that guarantees my rights by law. These rights are in our DNA:
Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition
Right to keep and bear arms
Right to my home; cannot be forced to house soldiers
No unreasonable search and seizure; must have a warrant
Due process of law
Protections for people accused of crimes
Right to a jury trial in federal civil cases
No excessive bail or cruel and unusual punishment
Rights for when a specific right isn’t spelled out in the Constitution
Rights not delegated to the federal government in the Constitution belong to the States or to the People
The Bill of Rights exists to protect our individual liberties. These first ten amendments limit the federal government’s power. I like the sound of freedom. That’s why I’m also glad that State Constitutions must agree with the US Constitution. We’re covered.
The Bill of Rights day is on December 15. Maybe you missed it. It’s not too late to celebrate. Every day is a good day when we live out our rights. It’s also a good day when we guard these rights and encourage others to do the same.
Which rights are you enjoying today? Also, how will you defend your rights? I’m thinking a lot about it lately…
