Why Race, Gender, and Class Dominate Election Choices
Based on the news, Americans seem to make race, gender, or class a litmus test for voting for a candidate. Shouldn’t we emphasize character, consistency, the Constitution, and courage? If so, why don’t we make this the norm? It’s a citizenship issue, so let’s discuss it.
The Importance of Character in Political Candidates
It takes more time to discover a candidate’s character than your daily newscast allows. We either don’t have the time or don’t take the time to investigate the most important thing about a person running for office: their character.
Evaluating a Candidate’s Consistency Over Time
How do you know about a candidate’s consistency unless you dig a little to see whether the person you are considering voting for has maintained their beliefs over time or recently changed their mind? Could it be that this candidate no longer holds their former passionate beliefs and has gone “middle of the road” to secure more votes? Your vote, perhaps? Usually, people like this flip back without warning once the election is over.
Why Constitutional Knowledge Matters for Every Office
What about a candidate’s knowledge of the Constitution, even if they are running for dog catcher? Every American holding public office must demonstrate knowledge of our founding American documents. Do they know what makes America, America? How familiar are they with the Bill of Rights? It’s shocking to me how many candidates cannot name the 5 freedoms in the First Amendment or know that the Constitution limits and defines government power.
Recognizing Courage in Political Leadership
Holding office today requires courage. How has your candidate demonstrated this attribute during their life? Perhaps they served in the military. Maybe they courageously stepped in to help a stranger in need. How have they demonstrated the courage of their convictions, whatever their convictions may be? Courageous people don’t blame others as the focal point of their campaign. Instead, they rise to defend the beliefs they are passionate about.
Becoming an Informed and Responsible Voter
Are you open to assessing the way you vote? Are you willing to do some research beyond what the media tells you? Are you willing to change who you vote for based on their passion for the freedoms we have and the eternal vigilance of past generations in defending and preserving the liberty you enjoy today?
