It has always amazed me that people choose a President based on outward appearance rather than their loyalty to the Constitution, fundamental beliefs about America, or contributions to our country.
More Than The Look of Apparel
For example, about 20 years ago, people gravitated toward the “look” of cornflower blue collared shirts with rolled-up sleeves, sans business suits, or ties. The appearance of “youth” was the icing on the cake.
More Than the Label of Title
The idea of calling someone “Madame President” instead of “Mr. President” has captured the fancy of some voters for a few election cycles. I’m not talking about the ability to carry out the nation’s highest office. Instead, for some people, it’s about the novelty of modernity on the airwaves.
To clarify, I’m not suggesting that a woman isn’t capable of running for office. I simply see how some Americans will vote—the novelty of the title.
More Than the Look of Melanin
Then, of course, we have the skin color issue. In the current run for the nation’s highest office, we have had candidates who are of red, brown, yellow, black, white, and orange skin tones. How does skin color or ethnicity qualify someone to be President? It doesn’t. Melanin does not qualify or disqualify any person from running for office. Neither is melanin a determiner of ability.
More Than the Look of Beauty
Research has been done showing some uninformed voters use physical attractiveness as their reason for voting for a candidate. Perhaps they perceive beauty to be synonymous with competency. (Go figure!) Judging outward appearance in place of doing research for competency and historical evidence of the candidate’s beliefs does not measure a person’s worth or ability to do the job. The media has not proven to be a reliable source for screening a candidate’s ability to carry out the duties of elected office.
How to Choose a President: Do Quality Research
So, maybe you haven’t done your research on the candidates for our nation’s highest office. Since media isn’t reliable, where could you start? You can compare candidates’ actual records, not what the media says about their records. You could refuse to use beauty, skin tone, title, or wardrobe as your reason for choosing them. You could research time in office, work experience, or service to our country. Be creative. Make it your mission to discover who would fulfill the duties of the office of President, namely, to protect our God-given rights and to preserve, protect, and defend the U.S. Constitution. That’s something that outward appearances can’t tell you. Your research can empower you to make a decision based on facts, not superficialities.
