My recent articles have generated an interesting question. As an example, see https://civicsandcitizenship.org/who-controls-america-states-or-federal-government. History buffs want me to include former times to show where and how they believe our country deviated or went off the rails in their opinion. They strongly desire me to shed the light they have on the issues. Why would I leave out the history that does a deep dive into how things got to be the way the American government operates today?
History and Civics: United, But Different
- History is in the eyes of the beholder and is best told by the writings of the people who lived at that time. Any other sources, in my opinion, are someone’s interpretation of that culture and those historical events.
- Civics is a social science dealing with the rights and duties of citizens, according to Webster’s 1828 dictionary, which is closest to the language of our Founders. Our rights and duties as citizens are my primary focus on this education page.
My Civics Focus
- My articles are often based on the curriculum offered by the Institute on the Constitution. We discover what is in our founding American documents (The Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution) and learn about the notions of liberty that inspired our Founding Fathers.
- My articles aim to promote Civics and civil conversation. For those wanting to write lengthy rebuttals, I invite you to begin an education page of your own. The more Civics and Constitution teachers we have, the better!
Study History, Engage in Civics
Study history as we engage in civil discourse about civics and the Constitution. If something sparks a thought, you might search for that topic to see if there is a historical background. Also, I encourage you to reflect on your own role as a citizen. Are you actively exercising your rights and responsibilities? Have you exercised your First Amendment rights to speak, peaceably assemble, or write editorials? If you feel compelled to share your insights or challenge the status quo, consider starting your own educational platform. Together, we can foster a deeper understanding of civics and inspire meaningful change in our communities.
