Fun, finances, freedom. Florida purportedly adds 1000 people a day to their population. Yesterday, I heard it called the “Sixth Borough of New York City.” What’s going on here? It seems like everyone is headed south, and not just for the sun. It’s a citizenship issue and a movement, so let’s discuss it.
I can think of at least three reasons NOT to move to Florida- heat, hurricanes, and rising home prices. When you move there, you take your day-to-day with you. It’s not a vacation anymore.
It gets as uncomfortably humid in Florida for months. However, if you like to be indoors for six months, cool. Go for it.
Additionally, there’s hurricane season, the price they pay to live in paradise. And yes, hurricanes come to your backyard, even if you live 2 miles inland. It happened to a friend last year.
Moreover, the demand for housing exceeds the supply with the influx of many new Floridians. This means rising housing prices. Plus, new schools need to be built, even if you don’t have children in school.
Most important, here’s what people see in Florida— Freedom. That is the big driver. Lower taxes and no state income tax are big draws. There’s the 4-letter word J-O-B-S as well. In short, one’s financial situation can be improved by the move.
And so they come from all over the USA to Florida. People want to keep more of their own money. Floridians and many Americans like law and order more than the news would like us to believe. People yearn to be free. It’s the same across the world. People migrate, if they can, to where they can find freedom. They will fight for it, put up with inconveniences for it, and work hard to get it.
My husband’s job is here, so I won’t be moving to Florida. I’m not a fan of alligators or giant cockroaches either, so there’s that (!). However, the mass migration to Florida begs the question:
What can we do to make our states and our nation freer? We see a blueprint unfolding. We can choose to go and do likewise right where we live.
