There are many interpretations of the American Dream. I just read one by author Walter Isaacson (The Greatest Sentence Ever Written (2025), Simon & Schuster). He talks about how the American Dream is brought to us by our government through economic means. I disagree. I believe the American Dream rests on limited government plus personal and moral responsibility.
Isaacsonโs View
Isaacson claims the American Dreamโs core principle is to be a land of opportunity for all. โIf you played by the rules, there would be good jobs at good wages, decent schools, safe streets, and โmost importantโthe prospect of an even better life for your children.โ (Isaacson, p. 35)
I disagree that the American Dream is achieved primarily through government. Yes, a government run by a free people with some defined primary common goals and interests is essential. But government is not the sole determiner of our success as individuals.
The Foundersโ Intent and Limited Government
Our Founders held that government is limited and defined as set forth in our founding documents- The Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
Role of Moral and Religious Teaching
Our Founders knew human nature needed limits. Thatโs why they encouraged religious teachings. The state was not to determine the religion of this nation, but in order to have a free people, you needed a society that agreed on certain moral behaviors, like cheating, stealing, and lying being wrong, which are taught in religious settings and benefit the society as a whole. In fact, the second paragraph in the Declaration points to the existence of a God (Creator), that our rights come from Him, and that the purpose of civil government is to protect our God-given rights, not to promise us an economic dream.
Family Structure and Economic Independence
To me, the American Dream is the opportunity to be free to pursue a career of choice, prosper, and keep the money I earn so I can provide and prosper myself and my family. I believe that the American Dream fosters healthy families by encouraging two-parent homes with one primary wage earner, so the other adult can be available to raise the children.
Policy Implications and Practical Advice
It canโt be all economics. There has to be personal and moral discipline involved that lets We the People pursue our dreams under a limited, defined, well-executed government.
What does the American Dream mean to you? Share a short example of how personal responsibility shaped your path. Tell us below, but as always, no names of prominent politicians and political parties in your comments.
