It’s admirable that many of us take on the hard work of preserving our Republic — our Founders warned that eternal vigilance is required to keep liberty. But defeatism (e.g. “We are doomed as a nation!”) won’t protect our rights: victimhood is not a strategy. Responsibility and local action are.
Why Victimhood Fails
Blaming “others” ignores the choices we have made: who we elect, whether we vote, and how we engage with our schools and communities. When civic education faded and participation slipped, we didn’t lose our rights overnight. We let the conditions form where rights are easier to erode. If we perceive ourselves as victims, other government systems are ripe to take us over.
Whining wastes time that should be spent defending liberty. Natural rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness don’t preserve themselves. While these God-given rights are our birthright, and the DNA of our nation, remember: no one will guard your freedom for you. If more people choose dependency on promises instead of self-government, politicians will gain power at the expense of liberty.
Practical Steps to Move from Victimhood to Victory
Accept responsibility and act. We the People can turn things around when we choose to lead at the local level: precincts, towns, school boards, counties, states, and Congress. Leadership doesn’t require fame — it requires showing up.
Consider these six actions:
-Vote consistently and encourage others to do the same.
-Volunteer as a poll watcher or election judge; support secure, transparent elections.
-Re-engage with local schools: advocate for civics and informed citizenship.
-Change your news habits: widen sources, favor factual reporting over emotional diatribes.
-Read the American foundational documents, the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution so you know the principles you’re defending.
-Strengthen yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally to serve your self, family, community, and nation effectively.
A small percentage of committed citizens can shift the course of a nation — that’s what happened in 1776. Don’t wait for someone else to fix things. Show up, take responsibility, and defend liberty where you live.
