Isn’t that the question Americans should be asking themselves, rather than, “Can I get my fellow Americans to pay off some of my debt?”
Passion vs. Paycheck: Choosing the Right Major
Our younger generation firmly believes that they should study subjects that indulge their passions. So, they attend a college that holds classes only Mondays through Thursdays. Do you know why this is? It’s partially because students start their “weekend” on Thursday nights. As a result, attendance on Friday is mediocre at best. You pay for a Monday-Friday school week but only attend four days per week. Contrast that with corporations that require employees to work Monday through Friday, full-time, with a commute.
In the world of work, full-time could mean any combination of days and hours to equal 40+ hours per week. We need to do a better job of helping young people understand that corporations are in business to build things and make money, not to be their fairy godmother
Understanding Student Debt and Its Impact on Your Future
Another way to look at this: It’s passion vs. paycheck. If you indulge your passion for underwater basketweaving, how much will you get paid with a degree in that field? Maybe you love the water and arts and crafts, but how long will it take that degree to net you an income? Isn’t higher education about contributing your skills to benefit you, your family, and your nation? Translation: You may need to keep your first love as a hobby but choose a profession that will pay the bills.
