What is America’s reality right now? It’s complicated.
Hang on. Stick with me here. Is cheating sometimes right? Do the ends justify the means if you believe a person to be so evil that they must be taken out of office? Does it matter how you “take them out?” Our Founders signed their names to the Declaration of Independence, which starts like this:
“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”
Are we at the point where it has become necessary for our nation to divide itself and dissolve the political bands which have connected us to each other? Do the Laws of Nature (conscience) and the Laws of Nature’s God (e.g., don’t steal or lie) entitle us to take matters into our own hands because half the nation believes they have a just cause while the other half think we should always follow the Constitutional process? I think not. We are not beyond our resources to solve the chasm that separates us.
The Twentieth Amendment explicitly states that “The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January.” Is that a suggestion, or is it law? If it is the law, then the current officeholder is still in charge until January 20. If it is a suggestion, then outside groups can “depose” the officeholder by stripping his title, especially if they believe their cause is just and right.
Confused yet, anyone? You see, we’re in the midst of a legal process. Half of America thinks this process is bogus. What’s done is done. Accept it. The other half of the nation wants the process to be examined, regardless of the outcome, thus setting a standard for future generations. If the discovery process finds no fault, the results stand as they are. If there is correction needed, let the Court render an opinion, and Congress take action.
Again, I ask, is cheating sometimes right? If the shoe was on the other foot, what would you want as your guide? Settled law? or Unsettled dictates of a powerful few?
Go back to the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God. That’s where our Founders sough answers to tough questions as they wrote the Supreme Law of the Land, the U.S. Constitution.
