Memorial Day is a day to celebrate the lives of our American heroes who have died in service to defend the freedoms we enjoy today. Below, I’ve gathered the names of a few heroes to help inspire us as we remember why we pause to celebrate. Note their deeds of valiant courage as they served their God and country.
Audie Murphy (Army, World War II) — He was one of the most decorated American combat soldiers of WWII. He is remembered for his extraordinary bravery and, later, for speaking openly about veterans’ struggles. His incredible military achievements are a must-read. Link to the article is below.
Lieutenant Commander Doris Miller (Navy, World War II) — He was an African American cook who, untrained, manned anti-aircraft guns at Pearl Harbor. He was later awarded the Navy Cross in 1942, honored for his heroism.
Major General Charles “Chuck” Yeager (USAF, test pilot and WWII/Korean–era fighter pilot) — He is a memorialized fighter ace and the first pilot confirmed to have exceeded Mach 1. You can read more about his bravery and courage in Tom Wolfe’s 1947 book, “The Right Stuff,” or see the 1983 movie adaptation by the same name.
Colonel Ruby Bradley (Army Nurse Corps, WWII & Korea) — She is one of the most decorated female military nurses. Col. Bradley spent years as a POW tending fellow prisoners. She is an example of rising above her circumstances by using her skills to help others.
Sergeant Kristoffer Domeij (Army, Afghanistan) — Sgt. Domeij served repeatedly in combat.— I’m always amazed by service members who return to fight another day.— He was killed in action while serving as a Ranger, remembered for selfless dedication.
Specialist Ross McGinnis (Army, Iraq) — This hero threw himself onto a grenade to save fellow soldiers. He laid his life down for his friends. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Lieutenant William “Bill” Albracht (Army, Vietnam) — Can you imagine being the youngest U.S. Army officer to command a firebase? Lt. Albracht was celebrated for leadership under siege.
I encourage you to select at least one article below to read about incredible determination and courage under great adversity. You will be humbled and inspired!
Have a meaningful Memorial Day!
