Have you ever actually read a political party platform? Many devoted Americans skip this step because it seems time-consuming or just plain boring. But if you want to be an informed voter, it is worth the time.
Maybe you prefer the drama of the media, or maybe you are still letting other people choose your candidates for you. Today’s electorate should understand that at least a quick scan of a political party platform is essential. You may be surprised at what you find — or what you don’t find.
What Is a Political Party Platform?
A political party platform is a party’s statement of beliefs, values, and policies. It serves as a kind of mission statement for the party’s overall goals. If you want to know what a party stands for, the platform tells you. That matters because candidates generally represent those positions. Read it carefully and make it personal: do you agree with the policy positions that matter most to you? If not, this may not be your candidate.
How to Read a Party Platform
Start by scanning the document for the Preamble, planks, and resolutions. Do this for each party. It doesn’t take long, and you may find ideas the news media isn’t covering.
Then look at the key themes, values, and tone in the Preamble. Identify your own key issues. What are your priorities? What are the platform priorities? A Party plank addresses a specific policy issue. Does it state the position clearly? Pay attention to the language. Does the platform’s wording leave important decisions to be made after the election? The outcome may not be what you wanted.
Also, make sure the platform is consistent and doesn’t contradict itself.
Compare and Analyze the Party Platform
Sharp voters may compare this year’s platform with platforms from other years. You might compare party stances on immigration, healthcare, the economy, or education. Notice any changes in values, beliefs, or policies over time.
Check the Claims Made in the Party Platform
You can also check the claims made in the platform. If it says something like “everyone will have a house,” ask whether that is realistic. What would government-issued housing look like? Look up past government housing programs. Would you expect the government to maintain the housing? How long? At what cost?
Why It’s Important to Read Each Party Platform
Reading a party platform is time well spent! After you examine your own values, beliefs, and priorities, you will be better prepared to vote with confidence in our upcoming election. Whether it takes five minutes or an hour, being informed and engaged is priceless to you, your family, and your country.
